In tough economic times, or when a company is going through a difficult period, the EO and CFO have to be alert to the increased likelihood of fraud. Fraud can be committed by people in the financial area; it can originate with executives in other parts of the company; it can start with anyone who has put their scruples on hold, and who stands to gain by the fraud not being detected. The calendar year 2009 is ending, but the reporting season is just beginning. As we work to "close the books" on time, it's important to remember that fraud is possible and that our job includes doing whatever we can to make sure we detect early or prevent it entirely. This presentation will be a real eye opener for the audience.
Jere's interactive presentation will focus on the occurrence of fraud: what it is and how it happens. She will begin with the definition of occupational fraud, and then discuss the nature of fraud, fraud motivators and the three major types of occupational fraud. She?ll discuss fraud prevention in further detail and include information on what a fraud prevention system should include, such as best hiring practices, eliminating fraud opportunities, and dealing with employee pressures and rationalizations. Lastly, Jere will go over some methods for detecting fraud, and red-flags that indicate the existence of fraud.
At the end of the meeting we will know:
- The complex definition of fraud;
- How to detect fraud;
- What some of the legal elements of fraud are;
- What some of the consequences of fraud are;
- How to prevent fraud.
